Example dryer with molecular sieve dessicant installation

Mar. 08, 2021

A plant producing potato products for the fast-food industry chose to purchase a heated blower-style dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  rather than heatless dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  when the plant was originally built. Had it purchased the heatless style, it would have consumed 15% to 20% of all the compressed air produced, all the time, requiring compressors sized to 200 hp matched with a 2,000 cfm desiccant dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  (300 to 400 cfm purge). Because heated blower dryer with molecular sieve dessicant s consume no compressed air for regeneration, this decision allowed for smaller, 150 hp compressors (one being VSD controlled) to be purchased with a smaller 1,500 cfm dryer with molecular sieve dessicant .

The air compressors selected were water-cooled, lubricated-screw style. The water temperature at this location is always below 50 degrees F which produces a nice cool flow of compressed air during all seasons. Rather than purging every four hours, the dew-point controller installed on the dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  delays regeneration, allowing the dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  to purge only every 12 hours, on average, which allows time for the dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  desiccant to cool off on its own by natural radiation. The dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  style selected allows for turning off the cooling purge; therefore, no compressed air is used for dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  cooling. Dual inlet filters were selected to reduce pressure differential, lowering the compressor discharge pressure. An uncontrolled heatless dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  would have consumed the equivalent of about 60kW in purge related electrical costs.

The controlled heated blower dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  consumes an average of 6 kW of heater and blower power. The dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  saves an equivalent of $47,000 of electricity (at 10 cents per kWh) annually. At the time of purchase, the incremental cost of installing the more-efficient dryer with molecular sieve dessicant  and filters was $16,400, resulting in a very quick simple payback.
